I am an undergraduate student at Oxford University, and last year joined Opus Dei as a supernumerary; I would like to share a favour I received through Pedro Ballester's intercession.
My uncle had been very ill from a combination of serious lung-related problems for several years, and it became clear over the course of last summer that he did not have long to live. He had also been estranged from the Faith for over twenty years and spoke very bitterly about the Church.
Through being a resident at Grandpont House, I got to know several people who were very close to Pedro while he was still alive, and started asking for his prayers, that my uncle could return to his faith and have a happy death. For many months it seemed as though nothing was happening. However, I was fortunate enough to watch the premiere of the film about Pedro’s life, which is now on Youtube, at Netherhall House in London, in December. And I thought I might send it to my uncle. After praying about it for a few days, knowing that he was quite dismissive of the Faith and this could make his attitude even worse, I decided to send him the video with a message – I phrased it as 'something that could help with getting through tough times', thinking that maybe the similar circumstances of his illness and Pedro's might move him.
Because his health took a sharp turn for the worse over Christmas, he wasn't able to watch it until January 7th. When he did though, he got in touch and told me how moved he had been by it, that he had started praying the rosary again (using one blessed by St John Paul II which my father had given him), and that he was keeping everyone who had helped him with their prayers in his own. He also made a joke out of the fact that at least Pedro was still able to enjoy his favourite whisky at Christmas, whereas he had been told not to drink over the period because of his treatment!
On January 9th, my uncle invited his parish priest over to his house (he was home from hospital then), went to confession for the first time in over twenty years, was anointed and received Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist. He also said that he had made arrangements for his funeral, and for continuing to receive the sacraments when he went back into hospital.
In under two weeks, at 09:00 on January 22nd, my uncle died peacefully, fortified by the rites of Holy Mother Church.
I believe that Pedro's witness and intercession supported him through his last days, and helped to bring him back to his relationship with Our Lord. Pedro, pray for us!
